Material World

In class we will take time to look into the book Material World. We talked a little bit about the book today. 16 photographers traveled to 30 nations around the globe and took picture of the families outside their homes, surrounded by ALL of its possessions.

Tonight, look around your bedroom and picture in your mind what your portrait would like if one of the photographers visited you. Explain the mental picture in your head and then explain how you feel about it and what your thoughts are about the possessions that were in your bedroom. What if the photographer took a picture of all the possessions in your entire home? Do you think that you could give up some of the possessions? Do you need all of these possessions?

  1. In my mind if my room was empty it would look like an abandoned room that was all out of shape. And my possessions would be all gone and they wouldn't get out of my head.I do think I could give up some of my possessions because there are people in the world that don't have any possessions what so ever. And no I do not think I need all my possessions because I need to start offering stuff to other people.

  2. Nice response!
Now try to picture what the photograph of all your possessions outside your house (like in the book) would look like to you. How does it compare with the pictures we looked at today?

  3. In my room I have lots of stuff, some is junk and some is precious. If a photographer took a picture of all the possessions in my home I think I could give up some of it. I think I need 75% of my possessions.

  5. I think the portrait of my room would be almost all things were wants not needs and the portrait might look very messy and be a lot of junk. If the photographer took a picture of my entire home it would look even messier (because of my sisters rooms) and would have a lot of random objects. I think that I could give up a lot of the possessions and I defiantly don't need them all. J.P.

  8. The mental picture in my head is like maybe the size of 1/2 of Mrs. Suskinds room. I don't think I need all of the possesions like a TV or some of the toys. I could give up my TV if I needed to.

  9. My portrit would be big because I have alot of possessions in my bedroom. If we did a portrit of all of are possessions in our house it would be huge it would fill up our whole yard and my yard is big. I would give away all the junk I have in my room like old clothes or things that I don't need. Henry

  10. My bedroom would look like an empty blob somewhere in resemblence to a square.I would feel strange, like small objects had not been invented yet. I think I could give away some of my possessions like my bedside table and my chair and dresser. I think I need about two-thirds of my possessions. - William

  11. In my room have lots of things I use a lot and lots of things that I barely ever use. I think I could give away all of the things I do not use and even give away some of the things I do use but that I don't need and I would still be grateful. Quinn

  12. I pictured all my clothes scattered on the ground, my toys and tools laying in and on top of my clothes, and the beds and cabinets all flipped over. I could give up lots of my possessions especially the toys. I do not need all my possessions.

  13. i have a lot of things in my room. If my room was empty and a person took a picture of it it would look diffrent than I am used to seeing it but it would look like nobody lived there. If a photographer took a piture of my whole house it would look raelly wierd. i have a lot of junk in my room i could give away alot of stuff but also i have more valuble things that i wouldn't give away. so i would say i need 75% of my stuff.

  15. In my room I have lots of stuff that I don't need. I think majority of the stuff I don't even use. If I took a picture of all the possessions in my house there would be a lot more than the pictures in the book.

  17. If someone took a picture of all of the things in my room, there would be a lot of stuff. Most of it I don't need and some of it I would need. At first, I thought that some of the families weren't doing so bad but compared to the things in my room they have the same amount of things or less. Most of it I could give away. Almost all of the things are just for comfort or for fun. Like I could just put my clothes in a bin instead of having a dresser. Half of the things in my room I need and half of it i don't need.
