Material World

In class we will take time to look into the book Material World. We talked a little bit about the book today. 16 photographers traveled to 30 nations around the globe and took picture of the families outside their homes, surrounded by ALL of its possessions.

Tonight, look around your bedroom and picture in your mind what your portrait would like if one of the photographers visited you. Explain the mental picture in your head and then explain how you feel about it and what your thoughts are about the possessions that were in your bedroom. What if the photographer took a picture of all the possessions in your entire home? Do you think that you could give up some of the possessions? Do you need all of these possessions?

What is poverty?

The official definition of poverty is:

the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor; indigence.

deficiency of necessary or desirable ingredients, qualities, etc.: poverty of the soil.


What is your definition? Is it similar to this? What "part" of poverty seems like the most difficult to you (ex: not knowing when you will have your next meal, not having a home, not having enough clothes to keep you warm)?

Name at least one thing you can do right now to be more appreciative of what you have?

I am so excited for my new class to continue working on this blog. I have enjoyed keeping the blog going so that we can look back at the growth of both the blog and the classes! Your first entry should be about blogging. What do you think of when you first hear the word blog? Are you excited to begin blogging, why or why not? Have you ever used a blog before this year?

I was wondering if any former students were still following the blog? It would be great to hear from you and get an update on how the new school year has started off for you. This could also be a great place to post advice for my current fifth graders:)
